 Denis Harper

 Oboe

Denis Harper, oboe, received his B.A. from Yale University. Mr. Harper made his debut as a solo recitalist at Carnegie Recital Hall in 1985. His performance moved the New York Times to praise his "clean, tapered, and exquisitely lovely tone. His breathing is always carefully controlled, his phrasing elegant, and he can float a tune with the best of them."As a soloist with orchestra, Mr. Harper has appeared with Kent Nagano and the Berkeley Symphony, the Haifa Symphony in Israel, and the San Francisco Chamber Symphony, where he performed Mozart's Oboe Concerto for the Mozart Bicentennial. His performance of Nicolas Verin's Miroirs deformants for oboe and tape at UC Berkeley was a West Coast premiere and was later broadcast on KPFA radio on Charles Amirkhanian's Morning Concert.

Mr. Harper has been a guest artist with the Laurentian String Quartet at Herbst Theatre, San Francisco, and has appeared at Carnegie Recital Hall with flutist and composer Gary Schocker, who subsequently wrote Piece for Solo Oboe for him. Mr. Harper is Principal Oboe with the Modesto Symphony and a member of the Oakland East Bay Symphony. He studied with Laurence Thorstenberg and Ralph Gomberg, both formerly of the Boston Symphony, and with Robert Bloom at the Yale School of Music.
