Stuart Sims is the Director of Instrumental Studies at California State University, Stanislaus, where he conducts the Stanislaus Wind Ensemble, the Stanislaus Symphony Orchestra, and teaches conducting and applied horn. Widely recognized for his work in the standard repertoire, Mr. Sims is also active in the commission and performance of new music, and performances of his ensembles have won praise throughout the country from composers whose work he has premiered or championed. He is widely in demand as guest conductor and clinician, recently conducting the 2003 CODA All-State Symphony Orchestra, at the 2003 Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic and the 2004 California Band Directors Association annual conference. He also recently presented a concert-clinic at the 2004 CMEA Professional Development Conference. Mr. Sims has made appearances this spring conducting several regional honor groups, and at the 2005 CBDA conference and the 2005 CMEA conference. Ensembles under his direction travel often and widely, with recent and upcoming performances throughout the state and abroad, in Austria, Hungary, Portugal, Spain, and China.

Mr. Sims is also Music Director and Conductor of the Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra, a highly select regional high school ensemble. He is active in other realms, having recently founded The Loose Filter Project, an arts collective that advocates active participation in the arts. The project includes a music publishing company (Loose Filter Music) dedicated to furthering the creative development of instrumental concert music, as well as a website, www.loosefilter.com. Mr. Sims is also editor in chief of the College Band Directors National Association website, which can be visited at www.cbdna.org.

Mr. Sims holds a Master of Music degree in conducting from the University of Michigan, where he received a full fellowship to study with H. Robert Reynolds; and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Louisiana, Lafayette, where he also served as Assistant Conductor of the University Symphony Orchestra, studying with Xiao-lu Li and Andrew Johnson. As a conductor, he has also studied with Eugene Corporon, Craig Krichhoff, and Allan McMurray, among others. As a horn player he has studied with Corbin Wagner, hornist for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and Soren Hermansson at the University of Michigan. His professional affiliations include the Conductors Guild of America, the College Band Directors National Association, Music Educators’ National Conference, and the California Music Educators’ Association.
