The experience of hearing the
performance of music is an integral part of the education of any musician. In
addition to faculty, student, and ensemble concerts, the department sponsors a series
of lectures and recitals on Fridays at 1:25 p.m. This format gives the opportunity
for students to perform in recitals, for master classes, and for faculty to present
various topics of interest to all music students. To encourage students to participate
in a variety of listening experiences, the faculty of the Music Department has established
a 1-unit course in Directed Listening which is required of all music majors. Students
register for the appropriate section, MUS 2880 (lower division) or MUS 4880 (upper
division) each semester in residence.
All music majors are required
to have a minimum of eight semesters of Directed Listening. Transfer students
will be evaluated upon entry for Directed Listening requirements. Music minors are
required to enroll in a minimum of four semesters of Directed Listening.
Requirements of the Directed
Listening course include the attendance at:
6 CSUS Sponsored Faculty, Guest
, Senior Recitals, or Large Ensemble concerts
12 Friday Recital Hours
Part-time students are required
to attend all of the above concerts.
If a student has an unavoidable
class conflict with Directed Listening, he or she may appeal this requirement
by completing a Recital Waiver Form in the Music Department office. This Waiver must
be approved by the Department Chair and the student's applied instructor (no more
than one semester of Directed Listening can be waived in this fashion). If the Friday
Recital portion of the requirement is waived, the student must register for the course
and attend all of the required concerts and recitals besides those which have been
waived. However, if the evening concerts and recitals have been waived, the student
must register for the course and attend all of the required Friday Recital Hours.
Attendance of one off-campus
concert per semester is allowed to fulfill this requirement. Prior advisor approval
must be received before any concert substitution will be accepted. The student must
submit a signed program and a one-page concert critique to the Department for off-campus
concert credit.
Concert attendance credit shall
be given for all concerts when a performer is involved in a small portion only,
at the discretion of the applied instructor or ensemble conductor. Students involved
in two or more performing organizations will receive concert credit for one group.
