Piano Major Requirements

The following level proficiencies for piano students are currently required by the keyboard music faculty. In addition to these basic skills, applied courses of study are on file with the applied instructor.

Freshman I   Freshman II       All major scales from memory, hands together, four octaves, sixteenth notes, quarter = 60 All major arpeggios from memory, hands together, four octaves, in triplet eighths, quarter = 60 Studies from Hanon "The Virtuoso Pianist" A prepared Bach Two-Part Invention Two prepared solos   All major scales as above, in tempo: quarter = 68 All major arpeggios from memory in duple eighths, quarter = 108 Studies from Hanon "The Virtuoso Pianist" A prepared Bach Two-Part Invention Two prepared solos       Sophomore III   Sophomore IV       All major scales, all harmonic minor scales, hands together, from memory, four octaves, sixteenth notes, in tempo, quarter = 72 All major and minor arpeggios from memory, hands together, four octaves, sixteenth notes: quarter = 60 Studies from Hanon "The Virtuoso Pianist" A prepared Bach Two-Part Invention Two prepared solos   All major scales, all harmonic minor scales, as above in tempo: quarter = 80 All major and minor arpeggios as above in sixteenth notes: quarter = 66 A prepared Bach Three-Part Invention Two prepared solos       Junior V   Junior VI       All major and harmonic minor scales from memory, hands together, 4 octaves, sixteenth notes: quarter = 92 All major and minor arpeggios from memory hands together, 4 octaves, sixteenth notes: quarter = 72 Chromatic scale from memory hands together, 2 octaves from any starting note, sixteenth notes: quarter = 88 A prepared Bach Prelude and Fugue from "The Well-Tempered Clavier" Two prepared solos   All major and harmonic minor scales as above in tempo: quarter = 96 All major and minor arpeggios as above in tempo: quarter = 76 A diminished seventh arpeggio as other arpeggios, same tempo Chopin Etudes, or the equivalent Two prepared solos       Senior VII   Senior VIII       All scales as above: quarter = 100 All arpeggios as before Prepared solos from advanced piano repertoire in preparation for the Senior Recital   All scales as above: quarter = 108 All arpeggios as before Repertoire for Senior Recital or equivalent
