Introduction to Inventory
Data and insights derived from university-wide assessment methods are used for overall institutional improvement, including the following:
- strategic planning
- enrollment planning, especially student retention and graduation
- student services, academic and co-curricular
- academic program planning
- existing academic programs
- administrative support units
- faculty development
- teaching effectiveness
- student learning outcomes
Rather than starting from scratch with a series of new surveys (that we examined for comprehensiveness, mission compatibility, and cost), we plan to continue with surveys conducted previously on campus, such as the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). We will also administer faculty and staff surveys that correspond to NSSE which will provide both longitudinal and comparative data for university-wide assessment. In addition, we will take advantage of the option of adding questions to surveys already administered on campus (e.g., GE goals achievement on the IDEA form, embedded essay on WPST).
The content of the annual undergraduate and graduate exit surveys, and alumni surveys have been revised to align more with student learning goals and employments issues, and adapted for web-based administration. The alumni surveys, beginning with the class of 2006, are planned to be administered annually, tracking students at the 3rd, 10th and 25th year after graduation.
The Office of Institutional Research ensures that each of these surveys is conducted and analyses provided for campus review.
