  • Students must have an acceptable baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Students must have good academic standing at the last college or university attended.
  • Students must have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.5 in the last 60 semester units (90 quarter units) attempted.
  • Students must have satisfactorily met the professional, personal, scholastic, and other standards for graduate study, including qualifying examinations.

An application to the University may be obtained by contacting the Graduate School on campus or calling 209/667-3129. Candidates must forward the following documents to the Office of Admissions and Records:

  • A California State University Application—Parts A and B—accompanied by the required application fee.

M.A. Program Requirements

Additional admission requirements for individual programs are as follows:

For questions regarding a M.A. in Education, Curriculum & Instruction, call the Department of Teacher Education at 209/667-3357. To make an appointment with the M.A. Programs Coordinator, contact Dr. Ramón Vega de Jesús

The following documents must be forwarded to the M.A. Programs Coordinator, Teacher Education P330:

  • Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or GRE scores. Admission eligibility is based on a combination of grade point average in the last 60 units completed plus MAT scores to equal a minimum score of 100. The formula for this calculation is: GPA x 20 + MAT score = total score.  As an alternative, GRE scores (taken within the last five years) may be submitted. Acceptable minimum total score is 1200.
  • Submit two letters of personal recommendation from persons other than University professors, which indicate the applicant's potential for graduate-level study.
  • Complete a minimum of nine units of M.A. Education course work in residence with at least a 3.0 GPA.
  • Fulfill the graduate writing admissions competency requirement by achieving a score of 41 on the writing section of the CBEST.
  • Show evidence of a valid California teaching credential.
Students must maintain a 3.0 average or better on all coursework in order to continue with the program. The minimum acceptable grade is C-.  This degree must be completed within a seven-year time frame.

Courses are scheduled on weekends and on weekdays in the late afternoon and early evening to better accommodate the schedule needs of teachers.
