Re: Restoration of Funding for California State University in the 08-09 State Budget
Dear Senator/Assembly Member (Elected Official):
I am writing to express my strong support for restoring the $312.9 million in cuts that the Governor’s proposed budget makes to the California State University (CSU) system. I also respectfully request your support for adding $73.2 million to the budget in order to avoid a student fee increase at CSU.
I understand that California is facing a severe budget crisis. Nevertheless, it is important to remember that CSU is part of the solution to this crisis. Investing in CSU is investing in the future workforce and economy of California, whereas cutting CSU’s budget will ultimately hurt the State’s economy by limiting student access, reducing the number of qualified employees in California’s workforce, and limiting the gains made in helping students from underserved communities get to college.
The current budget proposal would mean more than $1 billion lost in economic activity for California because the CSU generates $4.41 for every dollar invested by the State. The faculty and staff at CSU Stanislaus educate the majority of teachers, nurses, social workers, business professionals, and other skilled employees who are critical to the Central Valley’s future workforce and economic health.
Governor Schwarzenegger’s proposed cuts to California State University are short-sighted, especially on the heels of over $500 million in funding cuts to CSU between 2002 and 2005. Please help California’s economic future by voting to restore CSU’s 2008-09 budget funding.
Thank you for your consideration of my urgent request. I strongly urge you to vote in favor of fully funding the California State University system of quality public higher education.
