Job Shadowing
This program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to briefly accompany a professional working in the field related to the student’s course of study or interests.  The student has an opportunity to observe a typical work day, ask questions, and develop an appreciation for the practical demands required of an employee working in the chosen profession.  The typical duration period is short-term, ranging from a half-day to a full-day in length.

Mentoring
This program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to receive career guidance from a practitioner in the student’s major or field of interest, so as to determine if the realities of working in the profession match the student’s career aspirations. Students can ask questions, seek advice, and develop networking skills.  The typical duration period can range from several sessions with the student at different intervals over the course of a semester, academic year, or more often, at the discretion of the mentor.

How the Program Works
  1. Students submit a Student Application.pdf to participate in the program.  The student must give a sufficient amount of notice for the Director to arrange a job shadowing or mentoring match in order to receive consideration (2 weeks notice).  The student is interviewed by the Director of the Career Services Center. Through the letter of interest and personal interview the Director is able to determine an appropriate match for the student and a time frame for when the match is needed.
  2. The Director contacts an employer in the student’s field of study who has indicated an interest in participating in the program, or who already supports the Career Services Center through other programs.  If the employer agrees to the request, the Director contacts the student and gives them the employer’s name and telephone number.
  3. The student contacts the employer directly to arrange an appointment.
  4. At the completion of the job shadowing or mentoring visit, the student is responsible for sending a personal note to the employer, thanking them for their time.
  5. After the employer agrees to the job shadowing or mentoring request, the Director sends an evaluation form to the employer to determine if the arrangement was satisfactory, confirm that the student showed up as arranged, and to solicit feedback for improvements.
  6. The evaluation is kept on file to determine if further requests from the student will be considered.
