Course Title:  Eighteenth-Century British Literature     

 

Units:  Three

 

Description:   The class will focus on the Gothic novel by male and female authors, considering the ways gender informs this genre.  Social/historical background will include contemporary gender theory (conduct books, women’s education, sexuality, economic and legal issues), the abolition movement/slave trade, the French Revolution and Britain’s reaction to it.

 

 

Requirements:  Participation, midterm, final, and a 20-25-page essay modeled on the academic article.

 

 

Prerequisite(s):  Graduate standing or permission of instructor.
