                           ENGLISH  MAJOR  (no fewer than  39 units)

         FOR STUDENTS WHOSE CATALOG YEAR IS 2005 (OR LATER)

         Students with catalog years before 2005, may follow this major instead of the major in their catalog year.  If they choose to follow this major, they must complete all six sections of the 2005 major.

1.    Complete the prerequisites in the major (6 units):

ENGL 2100 British Literature to 1800 OR ENGL 2110 British

         Literature after 1800.

ENGL 2200 American Literature to 1865 OR ENGL 2210 American

         Literature after 1865

·      NOTE: One of the above choices must be either ENGL 2100 or ENGL 2200.

6.    Select a minimum of 13 upper-division elective units:

The possibilities include, but are not limited to, creative writing, film, and

linguistics.  For example:

     ENGL 3010    Creative Writing Workshop, 4 units

     ENGL 3750    Introduction to Linguistic Theory, 4 units

     ENGL 4010    Poetry Writing, 4 units

     ENGL 4012    Fiction Writing, 4 units

     *You may also take any courses listed in the upper-division sections in

     3, 4, and 5 that have not been taken to fulfill those requirements.

Note:  Prospective graduate students in English should also consult their English advisor concerning what courses will best  prepare them for graduate study.
