Preface

First published as a book (hence the site's format), this ongoing project is now available only online; it is a research and reference tool, not a term paper factory. Useful to Americans who have no or limited access to university libraries and academic databases, it is also helpful to international readers interested in American literature.

This online book is organized in chapters and appendices. The ten chapters represent the major literary and historical perspectives, cycles, or movements in American literature; each chapter has an Introduction, a Selected Bibliography, and a list of representative authors. The twenty-two appendices cover a range of helpful and specialized topics in genre studies, writing assignments, research topics, and perspectives related to American studies.

This PAL site has individual pages on over 430 American authors. Except for a few, each page has a listing of primary works, a selected bibliography, links to relevant sites, brief introductions, brief biographies, and study questions.

March 2007: Almost all of the nearly 500 PAL pages have recently been updated. Since they consume too much server space and require constant updating, the listings of most of the articles, dissertation abstracts, and reviews have been deleted. Except for a few author pages, the Selected Bibliographies now include biographical and critical book titles published 1980-Present in English in the USA.

Please note that many of the study questions, which appear on different PAL pages, are taken from John Alberti, ed. the Instructor's Guide for the Heath Anthology, Second Edition, 1994, and Marjorie Pryse, Teaching with the Norton Anthology of American Literature, Fourth Edition, 1994.
