TESOL Certificate and Masters

The certificate and MA-TESOL are intended for graduates and undergraduates with majors or minors in English who wish to have preparation to teach English to speakers of other languages. Students who have not been majors or minors in English need to complete at least three prerequisite courses in English — a 2000-level World Literature, a 2000-level American Literature, and 3009 Applied Writing.

The TESOL MA and Certificate are particularly appropriate for those who want to teach English in post-secondary language institutes overseas. The TESOL Certificate program consists of six TESOL-related courses (18 or 19 units) and requires a minimum of six units of college-level study in a foreign language, a HILT course, or demonstration of equivalent proficiency. Neither program requires fluency in any other language. Of course, fluency in both written and spoken English is required of non-native English speakers. The certificate is not a California state teaching credential. (Individuals seeking credentials to teach in California public schools should inquire in the Department of Teacher Education.)

The Masters
The TESOL MA consists of the above classes, plus four more 5000-level courses — a total of 30 graduate units — and a written TESOL Comprehensive examination. A full-time student can complete the MA in two years. The English department offers graduate students the opportunity to do a "dual MA," combining TESOL with either a Writing or a Literature concentration.
