The University recognizes the need to provide information on accident insurance to drivers and passengers of motor vehicles used during the conduct of official University business by University authorized drivers.
University Vehicle Use:
- Driver: The driver, who is either a member of faculty, staff or an authorized volunteer, when duly authorized to drive a University vehicle to conduct official University business and has an approved Travel Authorization is covered by Workers Compensation Insurance.
- Passenger(s): Authorized passengers only are covered by the universities liability Risk Pool Plan.
- University Vehicles: The University carries no insurance for the repair of damage to its vehicles. Individual departments may be responsible for the repair/replacement of any vehicle damage while they are using a vehicle as part of their vehicle use privileges.
- Non-authorized passengers: There is no insurance for these passengers. If these individuals are injured in a University vehicle there only recourse for recovery of medical costs would be through a legal challenge.
- Private Vehicle Use:
Driver & Passengers: The vehicle owners personal automotive insurance is responsible for medical costs incurred. The insurance maintained by the state is only applicable to that liability of the person which is over and above the liability insurance maintained by the person. This provision is for properly authorized use of a private vehicle, completion of STD form 261 and 262. (Authorization to use a Privately Owned Vehicles on University of State Business and Travel Authorization forms.)
