Use of University Owned Motor Vehicles:

This guideline provides information regarding the use of University owned Motor Vehicles and driver requirements.

Vehilcle Use: University vehicles shall be used only in the conduct of (state-funded) University business. This means ?only when driven in the performance of, or necessary to, or in the course of, the duties of University employment?

Drivers: Only University employees (faculty, staff and authorized volunteers) may drive University vehicles and only for the conduct of University business. The university may not loan or lease a University vehicle to an auxiliary organization.

Authorized Drivers of University Vehicles must:

  • Be in active, state-funded pay status or in Job Class code 0050 (volunteer employee)
    Note: Potentially any individual may be made a volunteer employee.
  • Have satisfactorily completed a CSU-approved defensive driving course.
  • Have a valid CALIFORNIA driver’s license in their possession. The driver’s license must be of the correct class for the type of vehicle driven. (Class C for cars/minivans, Class A or B with a ?P? (Passenger Endorsement) for 15 passenger vans.

Passengers: Passengers in University vehicles can only be faculty, staff, authorized volunteers or students on recognized and authorized trips. In no event are other individuals allowed to be passengers. If an authorized driver on authorized university business is attending a function where personnel from other campuses are attending they may be transported provided the travel authorization accounts for this possibility.
